Description

For :iconwindsonde: and their Turtle Festival!

Kri loves the turtle festival - how could he resist another chance to show off to the other young gryphs? Unfortunately for him, his audience this time was not so easily impressed. Samael was busily stuffing his face with turtle eggs, and idly wondering if he should rip the head off Kri's ...creation, just to annoy the attention-seeking puffball. He was too stuffed by that point, however, so settled with making snarky and lewd comments. Kri was too busy trying prove how skilled he was to realise Samael was insulting him, which just proves how ridiculously oblivious he can be. Samael got a little pissed because he was not eliciting a reaction, but at least Kri was distracted and didn't steal his food.

ps. That sand monstrosity is actually meant to be Kri in all his adolescent glory >.> Hence the feathers in his ears.

okaay... so i was meant to finish this last week, but didn't manage to due to SC Trials. I hope i'm not too late :/ Also it ended up a little rushed at the end.
And Kri was an absolute bitch to draw, while Samael remarkable easy, which is irritating. Samael is such an awesome character! I wish Kri were simpler ^^

Reference, reference, reference. Draw from reference as much as you possibly can. The only reason why this image doesn't work in certain areas is because you guessed what it would look like, such as the wings, the hind legs, the sea and atmospheric depth, the sky and so on. Another thing that isn't really working in this piece is your shading and use of light; the sun is behind them as indicated by the sea, but the different elements in the drawing don't show it as much. Be very conscious of your light source and how it affects everything in your drawing.

Composition wise this picture doesn't really work. Both of the characters are hugging the borders and the sand gryphon is right in the middle, which is drawing all of the attention to it as though it's the most important, when you'd think the characters are the primary points of focus. It's also a rather static composition, because everything that's important is on one line and of about the same size. If you look at this image: [link] for example, the subjects that matter are in a clear hierarchy in the image and the most important subject is given room and has the highest contrast in the image, drawing all of the attention to it. Also notice how there are characters close to us as well as further away and are overlapping each other; this creates a dynamic flow to the piece that is interesting and pleasant to look at. Something you'll want to remember for future pieces :).
